What’s your approach with new clients?
It’s like a wild getting-to-know-you game. Every great hair experience and relationship with a hairdresser begins with a conversation. Let’s talk about it and make it happen.

Tell us about the party hair you do.
I adore doing party, costume and specialty hair. Give me an extreme period piece to replicate and I’m basically in heaven! I also love classic styling, which can be for everyday or a special occasion. It’s something I’ve spent a lot of time doing and don’t have an opportunity to do it as much as I like, so I really embrace the chance to get wild with the tail comb.

What’s your secret for great hair?
Proper hair product knowledge and DIY know-how. I want to polish you up when you’re in the salon but show you how to get the same look at home.

You work with a lot of wavy + curly haired-clients. What’s key for the curls out there?
Product cocktailing. It’s important for everyone to get their own recipe down pat, but it’s been particularly helpful for my curly and wavy haired clients, because usually a single product alone isn’t enough get the ultimate in luxurious hair. As someone with curly hair, I know this first-hand and make sure I’m always trying new products and combinations. I love being a product mixologist.

Describe your own approach to personal (+ hair) style.
Working with what the good lord gave ‘ya. Feeling comfortable in your own skin and style is the ultimate in confidence and embracing what you have is going to ultimately make you the most happy.

What’s The Life of Emily look like when you’re not doing hair?
Style editor for AfterEllen.com and blogger for VAIN. I like wig-making, knitting, clothing reconstruction and costume making. I like to make domestic things that are kinda dark references to pop culture (ask me about the “Tiny Beauty Queens” coaster set complete with cash fans I made sometime). Animals make my world go round but I’ve managed to limit myself to the best fur children ever, Henry the dog and Lucy the cat. My wife and I love to garden and are decidedly domestic divas, as we both LOVE to decorate. We’re basically gay men trapped in lesbian bodies.
