What do you like about doing hair?
I think hair is an awesome tool to use to express yourself. You can use it to be subtle, sexy, outrageous or different. I like the fact that I can be part of that creative transformation! I’ve always changed my hair in with color, cutting it super short, growing it long, wearing it relaxed or in a ‘fro, with braids or in dreads, and I’ve had fun with it every step of the way. I want to others to have as much fun with their hair as I do with mine.
What are your hair + style influences?
I’m a people watcher so I’m always checking out how people are stylin’ and profilin’. I love clothing & hair styles from the 40’s…It seemed like even if they were just going to the grocery store they looked like they were going out for a night on the town. I also like the styles from the 70’s…the bell bottoms, the feathered do’s, afros, beads, platform shoes…all of it!
What’s your experience with braids and dreads?
I’ve been doing dreads for five years and braids for over 10 years. I’ve done these styles on just about every hair texture you can think of.
What’s a common misconception about dreads?
Probably that they’re just for a certain look. You can play with them and really make them your own, or you can just get up and go. Plus they give you great texture. I make sure all my clients sit down with me for a free consultation before we do dreads to make sure they get all their questions answered about maintenance, styling, removal, etc.
What do you like about working at VAIN?
The atmosphere, the mix of people that come here and work here. I like the fact that you can come in and see an older person sitting next to a teenager or little kid getting their hair done.
Interests outside of VAIN?
Working on my clothing re-designs, knitting, reading, roller skating (that’s 4-wheels folks!), and hanging out with my kids.
