What do you love about doing hair?
I love doing hair because it’s both creative and very technical and also lets me help people feel good about themselves.
What’s your secret weapon for great hair?
Stop shampooing every day! Daily shampooing leaves hair dry and stripped, so shampoo less and go for a good rinse instead.
What inspires you as a hairstylist?
My inspiration comes from my environment and what I see around me. VAIN is great in that regard because I get to see a wide variety of stylists whose work is amazing enough to get me thinking bigger. We discuss different techniques and formulas and learn a lot from each other in the process.
What’s your approach with new clients?
Meeting with a new client can feel a little like going on a blind date -- you both know a tiny amount about each other and have to work together to establish good communication. Pictures are a huge help when I’m working with someone new. They help establish tone and provide a design language that we can use to make sure we’re on the same page. With all of my clients, I consistently check in on their comfort and talk them through the steps I’m taking.
What inspired you to become a stylist?
I grew up in a hair salon -- my mother owned one for 20 years. Salon smells and the sound of hair dryers blowing take me back to watching her stylists have fun creating looks for their clients. I started assisting at a different salon when I was 14 and have worked in salons ever since as an assistant, receptionist, manager, and stylist.
What about life and interests outside of VAIN?
In my immaculately clean home I cook and work in my yard with my chickens and kitties.
