What do you love about doing hair and why?
I love that techniques and trends continually evolve. There's always something new to learn and the possibilities for experimentation and creativity are endless. It keeps me engaged and wanting more. I also love working with my hands and being creative while also helping people feel confident and beautiful.
What's your secret weapon for great hair?
Hot tools. Curling irons are great for enhancing natural wave and adding body to limp hair. Flat irons smooth out frizz and create sleek looks.
What are your hair style influences?
I love keeping up on the latest trends and figuring out how to adapt them to my personal aesthetic. I also follow a lot of celebrity stylists on Instagram and keep an eye on hair and fashion from Los Angeles.
What inspires you as a hairstylist?
I find natural beauty truly inspiring. I love enhancing my clients’ natural beauty with the right cut, color, and products. I'm also absolutely obsessed with how the sun naturally lightens hair, especially on children. I'm always trying to emulate that perfect natural sun-kissed look through hand-painted balayage. And of course I'm inspired by colors of nature and our beautiful Pacific Northwest home.
What's your approach with new clients?
I spend time learning about each client’s lifestyle and goals for their look. I’m a very visual person so I love when clients bring photos to their consultation.
What's the best hair advice you've ever been given?
Less is more. Sometimes adding just a few face-framing highlights or a gloss is all you need to feel refreshed.
What inspired you to become a hairstylist?
I've always loved being creative and working with my hands. Growing up I was constantly changing my hair and cutting my friends' hair with frosting caps and kitchen scissors. Eventually I decided to make a career of it.
Tell us about your education and professional experience.
I graduated from the Aveda Institute of Portland in 2015 and started working as an assistant at VAIN shortly thereafter. I completed my apprenticeship at VAIN under senior stylists Scott, Tiffany, and Lucie. I've taken advanced training with The Business of Balayage and plan to take additional courses in cuts and color and get my hair extension certification in the near future.
Life/interests outside of VAIN?
After growing up in Bend, OR, I have a special place in my heart for good beer and the outdoors. I'm always up for trying out a new brewery and paddling around Lake Union. I also enjoy crafting and attempting to cook in my tiny kitchen. Any and all binge-worthy podcast recommendations are welcome!
