What do you love about doing hair and why?
I love making people feel better about themselves and connecting with people I might not otherwise get to meet. Plus I get to be creative and experiment with shape and color. It’s a career that brings new challenges and never grows stale.
What's your secret weapon for great hair?
Don’t shampoo so much! It’s fading your color and drying out your hair and scalp. Also, don’t worry too much about face shapes and advice from magazines – just choose a look that makes you feel amazing.
What are your hair style influences?
60s French girls. Mod styles. Film noir. Modern beachy styles and lived-in texture.
Vidal Sassoon. Modern art. Angular lines and clean shapes. Minimalism.
What inspires you as a hairstylist?
When it comes to color, I draw a lot of inspiration from nature and fabrics. Social media helps me stay current on trends so I can give clients advice on what’s new and what’s next.
What's your approach with new clients?
A lengthy consultation with lots of photos. I make sure I understand clients’ style and lifestyle before we make a plan together for their dream hair.
What's the best hair advice you've ever been given?
Use dry shampoo and ditch budget products if you want your hair to look and feel its absolute best.
What inspired you to become a hairstylist?
In high school I dyed my hair all kinds of wacky colors and ended up doing my friends’ hair too. It all fell into place from there.
Tell us about your education and professional experience.
I moved to New York City at 17 to study at ARROJO Cosmetology School and later was selected to work for Nick Arrojo at his SoHo studio. I completed a 2-year apprenticeship in 18 months and continued to work at the studio as a colorist for another year. I missed cutting hair so I completed a second apprenticeship at Ludlow Blunt Salon in New York City. After that, I finished a 4-year Vidal Sassoon instructed cutting and barbering apprenticeship in just two years and stayed on to take cut, color, and barbering clients for a year after that. I’ve worked Mercedes Benz Fashion Week a number of times, took continuing education classes at Wella Global Studios, and currently teach classes on various techniques to apprentices and stylists at VAIN.
Life/interests outside of VAIN?
After years in NYC, I’m enjoying life in the Northwest. I love being outdoors and am particularly into plants. I’m into all sorts of books, movies, music, art, and fashion. And of course spending quality time with my cat Olive.
