Gettin’ WORN OUT: a Q&A on Fashion Show Hair with VAIN Founder Victoria Ptak

Stranger WORN OUT

VAIN is designing hair + makeup looks for next Friday, April 8th’s huge WORN OUT fashion show, The Stranger‘s first annual fashion event. The show features visuals by Dumb Eyes + fashions by a variety of emerging and established Seattle designers. This won’t be your average fashion show, so we’re not doing average hair.

As a team of VAIN hairstylists + makeup artists get ready to style over 60 (!) models for the show, the VAIN Blogbots sat down with VAIN’s founder + styledriver Victoria Ptak (formerly Gentry) to talk about fashion show hair, her vision for WORN OUT, and how far she’s come from a neon-filled New Jersey runway back in the 80′s.

How are you approaching designing hair + makeup for WORN OUT?
We are organizing our artists into teams for each designer based on particular skills and interest. The hair and makeup teams are working with me using input from the designers to create looks to best support the presentation of the lines.

Why are you excited about working with The Stranger on this?
We’ve had such great experiences working with The Stranger in the past, and they are in a great position to take on such a big show and do it with vision. Plus we are thrilled they have selected emerging as well as established designers to represent the Seattle fashion community.

How will the looks you’re designing be different from “typical” fashion show hair & makeup?
The looks are super varied to suit the designs. A great blend of ready to wear and couture/art fashion. We will have the opportunity to create some theatrical hair and makeup that wouldn’t fit in a strictly commercial show. The final look of the evening is going to bring the house down!

You’ve been doing hair for fashion shows for a while. Any memorable ones from when you first started?
The first fashion show I ever helped organize was in 1986 for a small boutique in New Jersey. The models were my teenage clients from the salon. My vision was a lot of neon and huge hair (it was 1986, after all). The first girls walked out to “Fight for your Right to Party” turned up to maximum volume. I was super excited but the models’ mothers were obviously aghast. It was a bit over the top for suburban NJ but it was definitely a show!

What’s your favorite part of doing hair for fashion shows?
I love the creative process of designing looks to support and enhance the vision of the clothing, but my favorite part of every fashion show is that moment when the lights go down and the spots come up, then all the time, effort, preparations and nerves are gone and it’s show time.

Community Focus: Ballard Bee Company

Monday, March 7th, 2011

VAIN has remained committed to building strong ties with our community. That’s why we were extremely excited to see long-time client and apiarist extraordinaire Corky Luster in the running for AMD’s Visionary of the Year Award for his start-up Ballard Bee Company.  If Corky wins, his small business will receive $20,000 from AMD. You can help Corky out by clicking here and voting… over, and over, and over (don’t worry, everyone is doing it!).

Corky and his wife Karen (who both frequent VAIN superstars Megyn and Bash) have worked tirelessly over the last few years to grow their business from backyard beekeeping into a citywide partnership with local families, farms, restaurants, and other businesses by finding sponsors for their more than 60 hives. In return, the bees go on to pollinate fruit trees, flowers, and other plants which in the big picture goes on to make Seattle a more beautiful city. Additionally, the honey produced is used in local restaurants like Bastille (which has hives conveniently located on its roof). It’s also sold around town at shops like DeLaurenti (just three blocks from VAIN Downtown) and The Field House (less than a block from VAIN Ballard).

Don’t forget to vote, and while you’re at it give VAIN a call and get your hair done by Megyn, Bash, or one of our many other superstars. VAIN Downtown (206) 441-3441 or VAIN Ballard (206) 706-2707. While getting your hair on @ VAIN, don’t forget to pick up your honey nearby.

Feather Hair Extensions at VAIN!!!!!

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011

We’re offering a new service at VAIN that we knew would be hot right away: feather hair extensions. That’s right: feather. hair. extensions.

Clients: Various awesome ones (pictured from top: Alicia, Chloe, Kristy, Kayleigh)

VAIN Stylist: The one + only, mega-talented Kelly

The Look: Feathers in hair!

The Details: These ain’t no clip-in pieces: the feathers are real + secured to your hair with a tiny bead, a method that requires no glue or heat- the bead basically acts as a barely-visible clamp. They last for about a month or more (or less if you just want them for a special occasion) + can be washed, dried + even gently flat-ironed or curled along with the rest of your hair. Removal is quick + easy. Here’s the best part: they only cost $25 for the first bundle of 4-5 feathers + $15 for any bundles after that, including cost of having them put in.

Kelly says: “I’m going to make everyone look like a swan!”

More pictures of Kelly’s recent feather extension / swan makin’ work:

Needless to say, we’re loving this look. So what do you say, Seattle? Who’s up next?

Feathered hair is hot hair! Get your feather extensions done with Kelly or one of the other VAIN stylists who offer this service at VAIN downtown. Call us at 206.441.3441 to make an appointment + find out more.

    VAIN Loves VERA 2011 Calendar

    Wednesday, December 1st, 2010

Your wall called, and it wants you to put this calendar on it.

VAIN is so excited about this and we hope you will be, too. Starting this weekend, our “VAIN Loves Vera” 2011 wall calendar will hit local stores, with all proceeds benefiting The Vera Project, Seattle’s groundbreaking all-ages music and arts venue.

The calendar is a 12-month glimpse at the history and hairstyles of music as seen through the creative forces at VAIN. It’s got hip hop, punk rock, glitter rock, classical, hair metal and more, with a special tribute to famed NYC nightclub Max’s Kansas City (pictured above on the calendar cover) that features members of Seattle’s music and arts community, shot by famed photographer Charles Peterson. The calendar also includes images by mega-talented photogs Curt Doughty and Peter Kearns, with hair and styling by VAIN.

The project was definitely a labor of love for us (making it a benefit for Vera was the easy part!); music is a huge source of hair inspiration for both VAIN clients and staff, so we wanted to represent each genre right. No strand of hair was teased, sprayed, gelled or curled without thinking about the artists who inspired the looks with their sounds and style. We hope you’ll like the finished product and support a great cause in the process.

Look for the VAIN Loves VERA calendar at VAIN, The Vera Project, Sonic Boom Records, Easy Street Records, Pretty Parlor, and Georgetown eatery Smarty Pants. It will also be available for purchase online at www.theveraproject.org. Huge thanks to everyone involved in making it happen!
