VAIN founder and styledriver Victoria Ptak, who herself lives in West Seattle, said, “I love West Seattle’s strong community spirit and commitment to building a vibrant, inclusive neighborhood. I couldn’t be more excited about VAIN joining such a great collective of local businesses and having the opportunity to contribute a bit of spice to a part of the city that already has a lot of flavor.”

She also added, “West Seattle is off the hook.”

Yes it is, and we are SO, SO thrilled to become a part of the action. Stay tuned here and to VAIN on Twitter (@vainbeautyworld) for updates, job openings, and a sneak peek into the style transformation the space we’re moving into will undergo. What– you thought big change was just for hair?

Hot Hair: Summer Style

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

Straight from the VAIN Mirror photo booth we’ve got a summery Hot Hair style for those of you looking to take your bobs to the next level.

Nice bangs, nice smile.

Stylist: Cassie

Client: Sara

Cassie says: Sara had been growing out an inverted bob and wanted more of a “longer cut” to help with the transition. She wanted something fun that she could wear straight or wavy. We added layers and gave her new bangs.

True story: Sara had a two-hour drive to get to VAIN.

Side view.

Way to show some style dedication, Sara! Looking good.

Looking for a new look or a transition from your current cut? Give VAIN a call at 206.441.3441 downtown to book an appointment with Cassie or one of our other stylists.

Oh, Onesta!

Wednesday, August 17th, 2011

If you know me, you know that when I fall for a line of hair care products, I fall hard. And I’ve fallen hard for one, dear VAIN Blog readers.

Its name is Onesta.

Let me count the ways I love Onesta: the products are natural, color safe and free of harmful parabens and sulfates. They contain organic botanical extracts like sea kelp, green tea, sunflower and white willow bark, and they leave my hair feeling super clean and soft. Plus they smell amazing (seriously: we’re talking pure and vaguely peachy with subtle undertones of fresh citrus and what I can only describe as all-natural Tide. I am addicted to this entrancing organic aroma!). I use the Strengthening Shampoo ($12.95 at VAIN) and Daily Conditioner (ditto) topped off with a bit of the Volumizing Foam for body and shine, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. So good!

But don’t just take my word for it. Come experience Onesta for yourself! VAIN is hosting an Onesta event this Saturday, August 20 from 1-3pm at our downtown salon. We’ll have Onesta freebies, a chance to win products, and an Onesta expert onhand to answer questions about the line and recommend specific products based on your hair type.

Now, I know it might seem strange to some of you that I’m willing to share my new relationship with the world, but a love this natural and pure deserves to be shared. Treat Onesta well, Seattle. This one’s a keeper.

-Rebecca P.
VAIN blogger & Onesta lover

Hope to see you all this Saturday 8/20 for our Onesta event at VAIN downtown! Stop by anytime between 1 and 3pm. 2018 1st Ave at Virginia, Seattle.

Community Focus: Bald Solidarity

Monday, July 18th, 2011

People’s hair often serves as a marker of identity. It can be a statement about oneself which either whispers, speaks, or shouts to others. VAIN strives to help people with this concept every day; but on Saturday, July 23rd at 3:00 p.m. at Westlake Center Park you will be able to see VAIN stylists TT and Yuki help a few brave souls make a completely different statement with their hair.

Bald Solidarity–a local non-profit organization devoted to raising awareness about gender inequality issues around the world–will be holding their annual “shave” event. Five brave souls are shaving their heads (sans clipper guards) in order to raise money for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). Millions of women and girls around the world have little or no control over their lives; by shaving their heads these participants are sacrificing something we sometimes take for granted, the choice to make a statement with your hair.

If you’re interested in learning more about Bald Solidarity, just click and check out their website. There’s still time to sign up, but if you’re unable to shave your head you can always sponsor a participant, provide moral support at the event, or get an official Bald Solidarity bald cap and get some sponsors of your own to donate money. Just picture the schadenfreude response from your coworkers, at $1 a minute, you might be wearing the cap all week!

Check out Bald Solidarity’s website and/or attend the event on 7/23/11! Thinking about making a less  *ahem* bald statement or donating your hair? Call VAIN downtown @ (206) 441-3441 or VAIN Ballard @ (206) 706-2707.

Hot Hair: Extensions are magic.

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

You’ve heard it from us before: extensions can transform your hair in incredible ways. They’re great for adding length and/or volume, but they don’t always get enough cred for what they can do with color [Editor's note: have we ever told you about the time we added baby blue extensions to a bride's hair to match her wedding color scheme? True story. But back to the extensions at hand]. Here’s a great example of extensions added for color coming straight outta VAIN Ballard:

Client: Gretchen
Stylist: Lucie
Type of extensions: Great Lengths

Can’t quite tell which parts are extensions? That’s the magic. Lucie explains:

“Gretchen wanted funky color without having to pre-lift her hair or worry about colors bleeding or fading. I colored her hair in panels of red shades and put in bright red violet, crazy red, and peach extensions on top. The extension colors are really what made the big transformation.”

Like we said: magic.

Get some magic of your own: call VAIN downtown at 206.441.3441 or VAIN Ballard at 206.706.2707 to schedule an extensions appointment or free consultation with Lucie or any of our other extensions specialists.

VAIN Stylist Guest Post: All About Fine Hair

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

VAIN hairstylist Scarlet is known for 1. being awesome and 2. her expert skills in cutting, coloring, and generally beautifying fine hair. Here she stops by the VAIN Blog to share her story of going from flat, lifeless, oily, frizzy, lackluster locks to happy, shiny, healthy hair that has volume and will even hold a curl if she treats it right. Take it away, Scarlet:

VAIN hairstylist Scarlet: fine hair, fine lady.

************

A lot of people out there have fine hair, including me. Some of the lucky ones have a LOT of it, and others, like myself, not only have fine textured hair, but it’s also thin or sparse. Even the lucky ones with more densely packed follicles share many of the same fine hair complaints. Fine hair has its challenges for everyone who’s got it.

When I was younger I always wanted thick, luscious locks. My fine, thin, flyaway hair seemed to absolutely defy all my attempts at styling it, flatly (pun intented) refused to hold volume or curl, and seemed to get frustratingly both oily and frizzy within hours of shampooing it. Like many fine-haired folk, this led me to the destructive mis-belief that I need to shampoo the living daylights out of my hair. This continued until I started beauty school in 2004. Since then, my hair has made a miraculous recovery due to what I learned there and what I’ve learned since working with fine hair of all kinds, including my own.

The first thing I quickly became aware of is that having fine hair definitely has its advantages!

  1. It dries super-fast! I’m grateful every time I dry my hair that it takes no more than 7 minutes to get it completely dry.
  2. Curling it is easy! I can usually curl all my hair in 6 quick sections.
  3. We fine-haired folk can use less of all our products, because we simply don’t need as much. Instant cost savings!

The next thing I learned was that I had been doing everything wrong to my poor stressed-out tresses…

  1. Shampooing too often was drying out my already fragile ends, making them look damaged and frizzy, while simultaneously stressing out my scalp, which caused it to create MORE oil, to protect itself from the harsh shampoos I was using, not less.
  2. I was using products that were too heavy for my hair, to combat the frizz I’d created with all that shampooing, which was contributing to the constant oil slick near my scalp.
  3. Professional grade hair products (vs what you might get outside of a salon) really do make a huge difference in how fine hair behaves and looks.

So how did I go from flat, lifeless, oily, frizzy, lackluster locks to happy, shiny, healthier looking, (despite all the traumatic coloring services I’ve put it through!) more voluminous hair that will even hold a curl?

Gettin’ WORN OUT: a Q&A on Fashion Show Hair with VAIN Founder Victoria Ptak

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Stranger WORN OUT

VAIN is designing hair + makeup looks for next Friday, April 8th’s huge WORN OUT fashion show, The Stranger‘s first annual fashion event. The show features visuals by Dumb Eyes + fashions by a variety of emerging and established Seattle designers. This won’t be your average fashion show, so we’re not doing average hair.

As a team of VAIN hairstylists + makeup artists get ready to style over 60 (!) models for the show, the VAIN Blogbots sat down with VAIN’s founder + styledriver Victoria Ptak (formerly Gentry) to talk about fashion show hair, her vision for WORN OUT, and how far she’s come from a neon-filled New Jersey runway back in the 80′s.

How are you approaching designing hair + makeup for WORN OUT?
We are organizing our artists into teams for each designer based on particular skills and interest. The hair and makeup teams are working with me using input from the designers to create looks to best support the presentation of the lines.

Why are you excited about working with The Stranger on this?
We’ve had such great experiences working with The Stranger in the past, and they are in a great position to take on such a big show and do it with vision. Plus we are thrilled they have selected emerging as well as established designers to represent the Seattle fashion community.

How will the looks you’re designing be different from “typical” fashion show hair & makeup?
The looks are super varied to suit the designs. A great blend of ready to wear and couture/art fashion. We will have the opportunity to create some theatrical hair and makeup that wouldn’t fit in a strictly commercial show. The final look of the evening is going to bring the house down!

You’ve been doing hair for fashion shows for a while. Any memorable ones from when you first started?
The first fashion show I ever helped organize was in 1986 for a small boutique in New Jersey. The models were my teenage clients from the salon. My vision was a lot of neon and huge hair (it was 1986, after all). The first girls walked out to “Fight for your Right to Party” turned up to maximum volume. I was super excited but the models’ mothers were obviously aghast. It was a bit over the top for suburban NJ but it was definitely a show!

What’s your favorite part of doing hair for fashion shows?
I love the creative process of designing looks to support and enhance the vision of the clothing, but my favorite part of every fashion show is that moment when the lights go down and the spots come up, then all the time, effort, preparations and nerves are gone and it’s show time.

The Stranger’s WORN OUT fashion event happens next Friday, April 8 at ACT Theatre (7th & Union) in Seattle. Doors at 7pm, show at 8.
