Judy LaRue wants YOU to vote for VAIN!

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

Behold little Judy LaRue: daughter of VAIN manager Mel (pictured), mini style superstar (check out that pose + those sideswept bangs! Fierce!), and #1 fan of VAIN.

When we told Judy that VAIN has been nominated for Best Hair Salon, Best Hair Color, and Best Waxing in King 5′s Best of Western WA competition, she said “yogurt! yogurt! yogurt!” We’ll take that to mean she hopes all our clients, friends, and Blog readers will vote for VAIN. We won Best Hair Color last year and would be honored to win again. Plus there are lots of deserving small businesses nominated across all categories.

Thanks for your votes… Judy LaRue thanks you too!

♥,
VAIN

VAIN Hair + Style Interview 002: Eli Blü

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

Greetings and welcome to the second post of our VAIN Hair + Style Interview series! Each month we’re interviewing a style-strong VAIN hairstylist, staff member, client or other FOV (Friend of VAIN) to get their take on hair and personal style.

Our first interview featured front desk superstar Courtney, who touched on everything from taking hair risks to manga style to coveting the perfect leather jacket. For this next interview, we didn’t have to go far (what can we say? Our front desk staff is HOT) and will be reaching into the modern bionic heart of VAIN itself. That’s right, ladies, gentlemen, Blog readers and other monsters, we present VAIN legend, DJ Eli Blü.

Describe your personal style in six words or less.
An Evolving Experimental Individual Magical Superstar

The current iteration of your title is “Modern Bionic Techoid.” What does that mean?
The life-title denotes an uncanny, acute and ingrained affinity with, and understanding of technology and embraces the future in further developments and evolutions.

How has your style changed + evolved since you started working at VAIN?
My hair has undergone many more radical changes and treatments since my old DIY days! I’ve  even grown it out all natural and chemical free, just to see the result, but I absolutely always go back to BLU!

VAIN Hair + Style Interview 001: Courtney

Thursday, July 21st, 2011

Hello VAIN Blog readers, and welcome to the debut post of our VAIN Hair + Style Interview series! Each month we’ll sit down with a stylish VAIN hairstylist, staff member, client or other FOV (Friend Of VAIN) and get their take on hair and personal style.

First up is VAIN front desk superstar Courtney, who, in between booking VAIN appointments and generally being a salon operations ninja, likes to switch up her hair cut and color. A lot. Any visit to the photos from our VAIN Mirror digital photobooth will show you what we mean.

Here’s Courtney, DIY mistress, Cut and Color Chameleon, and Woman of Many Do’s, in her own words:

Describe your personal style in 6 words or less.
The result of following my whims.

What are your style influences?
There are so many, really! I can be influenced by anything: nature, art, architecture, books/comics/manga, anime and video games, music, street fashion from around the world…I could really go on and on, but you get the idea.

What style staples can’t you live without?
Honestly? Comfy undies that don’t ride up, a correctly-fitted bra and black socks… but I know I should say something more like: my Italian leather boots, a superior quality basic tee, comfy well-fitting, form-flattering jeans, the perfect leather jacket (AllSaints what?! Soon to be mine, oh YES!!) and my latest hair cut/color.

How does your hair influence your style or vice-versa?
Compared to my adventures in DIY hair-land my clothing style is pretty tame these days. I used to really fancy it up but these days I am a jeans and tee-shirt kind of girl. In terms of clothing I do tend towards a lot of black and neutrals, whereas my hair colors tend to be anything but.

What have been your favorite hairstyles and why?
I really have loved them all. I have especially loved my myriad extreme asymmetric bobs and short cuts and more recently my foray into periwinkle territory.

If any of you fine folks have ever spent more than three minutes inside of VAIN, you’ve probably noticed that a number of our staff have a strong affection for tattoos.

No Ordinary Product

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

This week’s staff product pick is coming straight from the hands of texture wizard, Alexis, and she is loving her some Moroccan Oil Styling Cream.

Alexis is nuts for the stuff!

Who? Those with coarse, thirsty hair. Bleach addicts.

Why? To make your hair as smooth as your wildest dreams.

Secret Tip from the Stars: Not only is it a great styling product to put in curly hair while it’s wet, it’s great for blow outs, too! No matter how you use it, it’s sure to smooth out all of your hair’s sorrows. Use a little to tame frizz after your hair is dry and still won’t just behave. We imagine this magical cream is what Sade would smell like if we ever got close enough to her in real life.

Grab some Moroccan Oil Styling Cream @ VAIN downtown and VAIN in Ballard for $30.99. You can book an appointment with the fabulous Alexis at either location while you’re at it!

Protect Yourself!

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

This week’s staff pick comes from stellar stylist Scott. He’s a big believer in the power of Kevin Murphy’s Full On Protection.

Scott is so excited to share his secrets!

Who? Folks with fine hair that want a lot of texture.

Why? To add shine or to add definition in place of a pomade.

Secret Tip from the Stars: Blow-drying Full On Protection into the hair activates the texture enhancing capability. When that’s all said and done and you’re still thirsty for more, spray on a little more Full On Protection and blow-dry that business in for extra messy magic.

Stop on by and grab a bottle or book an appointment with Scott to get the full on (tee-hee!) experience.

Scott works exclusively at our VAIN Ballard location. 206.706.2707

The future’s so bright, she’s gotta do braids.

Monday, September 20th, 2010

Meet Dez, VAIN Downtown’s newest talent specializing in customized braids, 2 or 3-strand twists, & sew-in weaves. Dez switched tracks from a career in graphic design to pursue her career in hair, giving her a designer’s perspective and eye for detail (spoiler alert: that means it looks really good).

Another specialty? Showing people that braids and twists work for any head of hair, whether male or female, long or short, bold or subtle style. “Braids and twists can really give someone a unique look that no one else has. I love to take what people see for themselves and help make it look 10 times better than they could have imagined.”

And that she does. Check out this example of one of her clients:

And you know VAIN’s staff had to get in on the braiding action, too (it’s true, we do eachother’s hair). Case in point, stylist TT:

Up: braids + updo by Dez

Down (nice smile!)

When asked for her take on joining the VAIN cast of hair superstars, Dez said, “I feel like I just got married and am beginning my new life. It’s a wonderful feeling to actually wake up and love where I work and who I work with!” We feel the same way, Dez. Welcome to VAIN!

Curious about trying braids, twists, or a weave? Call VAIN Downtown at 206.441.3441 to schedule a free consultation appointment with Dez.

Lift & Lock

Hairdresser hero and volume vixen Cassie wanted to tell you all about this week’s Staff Pick, the magical hair wonder that is Dust It.

Who? Anyone! Short, long, thick, or fine textures are bff with the stuff.

Why? For added texture and volume.

Secret Tip from the Stars: If your bangs are a little greasy, sprinkle a little Dust It on top of them, then comb it through with a fine toothed comb. The result is instantly revived bangs! Throwing in a little before backcombing doesn’t hurt either- it helps build the big hair you’ve always dreamed of.

Pick some up for yourself @ VAIN downtown and VAIN in Ballard. Cassie is ready, willing and available at both salons to whip your hair into shape. Call and make your appointment today!

VAIN Academy

Advancing our know-how and tweaking the power of our shears is something that we @ VAIN Beauty World hold very near and dear to our stylish hearts. In fact, I’m pretty sure that senior stylist/icon Jenny Slay has big dreams of opening up a future awesome VAIN beauty school starring her and VAIN superhero/owner Victoria Gentry as directors. It for sure would be the most rad thing to happen for aspiring beauticians in the Seattle area, but let’s be real- there’s tons to do within our own beauty world right now and autumn is bringing falling leaves and swooning stylists. Education is too hot to handle!!!

The Queen of Cool and Special Occasion Styling, Jenny Slay

For starters, the amazingly talented Kellianne is back from maternity and wow-ing the pants off everyone again, this time by single handedly teaching a series of advanced creative cutting classes for the junior stylists (i.e. the little slices of awesome who are newer to the scene but deliver hot hair at an even hotter price) to get inside their brains and perfect their skill. It’s an opportunity of a lifetime to be under the eye of such a master of her craft and after one class, I’m hungry for more. We have several classes left in the series, so if you or someone you know is interested in getting a complimentary cut (that’s right- FREE) in one of our advanced training sessions, give us a call! 206.441.3441

Hooray! Kellianne is back in action!

We’re tuning up all our strings, though- there’s an educational opportunity around every corner this fall for every stylist @ VAIN! We’re totally immersing ourselves in improving and evolving so that we can always deliver the absolute best to you, world. Bring on the instruction! You can look forward to bangin’ holiday up-do’s, the latest and greatest in fall and winter color trends and the 2011 VAIN Kevin Murphy Calendar. Our very own William will be leading an exclusive Kevin Murphy styling class, as well. There’s so much buzz, we can hardly contain ourselves!

The best are always striving to be better, we hope you agree. Excuse us while we sharpen our skills for you.

VAIN 4-eva,

Emily

As you may know, beloved VAIN stylist, Carly, is leaving Seattle for the bright lights of New York City. And while all of us at VAIN, clients and staff alike, will miss her effortlessly cool style and killer haircuts, we couldn’t be happier she’s joining the team at Seagull Hair Salon in the West Village on September 12th! And we’re extra happy because Seagull is owned by former VAIN stylist and all-around awesome guy, Shaun SureThing!

Here’s to the horizons ahead, Carly! You’re the freaking best!
