Lucky Breaks

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

It’s sunny and gorgeous today, the perfect temperature for us to start keeping the front door open here at VAIN Ballard. We’re unabashedly listening [and occasionally singing along] to Elton John. Carinn announced as she walked in the door that spring had sprung, but we’re actually acting as if we’re halfway thru summer.

Brightening color seems to be the theme of late, taking deep browns to sweet caramels; more than one platinum head has walked out the door and into the sunshine in the past week. Even those with existing dark color on their hair have found ways to add a touch of summer to their look. Many of our senior stylists specialize in corrective color, and our consultations to talk about options are always free.

Whether you’re out for a stroll or in for an appointment, you can still save on our boutique items for the rest of the week thanks to Lucky magazine.

Vain Ballard

The teeny tiny print there states that this applies at both locations as well, not just for our Ballard guests! We’ll be waiting, and upon request we’ll refrain from singing “Bennie and the Jets.”

Hot Hair! Short and sweet

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

Goodness knows VAIN is never one to have a gender bias, so it is by ’shear’ coincidence that Lucien is our first short cut on Hot Hair! Though he’s seen many of our talented staff over the years, this cut was shaped by Ballard’s Rachel.

Hot Hair

Lucien’s cut matches his stylish personality, but in a way that suits his busy lifestyle. It looks charmingly groomed even on the most frantic day, and can forgive a schedule that might miss the free touch up trim. We adore Lucien’s VAIN loyalty and applaud his Hot Hair and sweet smile. To schedule with Rachel or any of the Ballard stylists, please give us a call at 206.706.2707. We want to see your hot hair, too.

The good, the bad, and the ugly

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

Actually, nothing to report on ‘ugly’ or ‘bad’ - Ballard is quite good and lovely. But as for the good, we’ve got heaps of it. Good friends, good hair, good deeds. VAIN Ballard made a raffle donation to Dancing on the Valentine. The co-hosts, Three Imaginary Girls, are VAIN clients and loved ones - and friendship aside, the Leukemia and Lymphoma society is a cause we’re happy to be able to support. Some lucky attendee can come share in all the goodness - just be sure to buy a raffle ticket while you’re there!

Hot Hair: Romance!

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

Commercially generated holiday or no, Valentine’s Day is in the air. How better to celebrate than perfect romantic curls?

20080122-IMG_6718.jpg

Josephine came into VAIN Ballard to meet Alexis, and it was love at first snip. Rejuvenated curls with a soft, easy, touchable hold. With a little help from Deva Curl products and Bed Head’s Hook Up mousse wax, Alexis shapes cupid-approved locks.

For being our gorgeous Hot Hair! model, Josephine gets our undying VAIN gratitude and all the love in our ♥. To schedule with Alexis, or any of our curly-haired specialists, give us a call at 206.706.2707 (Ballard) or 206.441.3441 (Downtown). Happy Hallmark holidays to all!

Jewelry on sale in Ballard

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

Gold hoops, glittering rhinestones, and more - now 25% off at VAIN Ballard! Holiday parties may be past us, but pretty accessories never go out of style.

The works of Julia Garrels, however, will be available at the normal price for just one more week. As the 29th of December and the close of her show approached, we realized we couldn’t bear to part with the pieces just yet. Come see them while you can!

Our sale lasts while the jewelry does, but undoubtedly items like the Bueno Style vintage restylings won’t last long. Come see us soon for unique shopping or your next service!

Hot Hair! Blonde on Black

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

Our “good-looking, head-turning, how-did-they-do-that and how-do-I-get-mine-to-look-like-that hairstyles” feature returns for round three.

Stylist: Rachel (VAIN Ballard)
Client: Nicole B.
Look: Constant change

20071215-IMG_5883.jpg

Stylist Rachel (now full time at VAIN Ballard) has been working with Nicole B. for almost three years now! Nicole is always spot-on in terms of fashion and sense of humor. When transitioning from a bright white all-over blonde to a dramatic black, she wanted to keep a bit of that hard-to-obtain lighter shade.

Voila! Keeping the best of the old while progressing into something new. A perfect metaphor for new styles in the new year. Thank you, Nicole and Rachel!

Saturday’s celebrations

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007

Congrats to Julia Garrels, aka Metalwing, for her lovely and vibrant opening celebrations at VAIN Ballard last Saturday. She created an impressive number of pieces for this show, and the flood of color and fascinating shapes made for a great night. Here’s just a few examples of our gorgeous models wearing Julia’s art:

I was lucky enough to wear one of her pieces most of the night, a larger necklace that suggested a bird in shape and color. Deep red ochre tones [though actually made of enamel] and turqouise bursts made up for the lack of color I was wearing - that piece transformed a simple black dress into an outfit. The components lay perfectly across my neck, and the weight is just enough to be a presence without being cumbersome. It feels regal to be wearing a necklace like that, and I felt myself standing just a little bit taller throughout the evening. Holly, one of our models for the evening, described the feeling as “powerful.”

A huge thanks to all of our models - Alli, Holly, Jenn, and Paige - who showed off how much the jewelry truly is wearable art. Stylists Jen C. and Melissa created brilliant updos and styles to show off the neck pieces and earrings! And our makeup artist Christine brought those wonderful glittering eyeliners she used at the Strangercrombie shoot to give the models perfect holiday looks.

The full set of photographs can be found on VAIN’s flickr page. The jewelry will be featured at VAIN Ballard thru December 29th, and we invite you to come see it all in person.

Titanium and Enamel

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007

VAIN Ballard is busy this week getting ready for Julia Garrels’ wearable art exhibit opening this Saturday. Our models are ready to be outfitted in some of her newest works, and our shelves are waiting for a few specially made holiday pieces! We’re hoping you join us for her opening during the Ballard ArtWalk this Saturday between 6 pm to 9 pm, and visit the Ballard Chamber of Commerce to see what our neighbors are doing as well!

Our brief snowfall last week lasted just long enough to be pretty, without being a hassle to everyone with appointments. To match the icy days, we just received a special edition component to the Redken color line: Metallic Glam. Redken stylists, as a part of Prada and Marc Jacobs’ styling teams at Fashion Week, were inspired by the “surprising shock of heavy metal hues.” The result is unique titanium shades, the perfect metallic glamour to accent wintery weather. Ask your stylist to see samples and swatches if it sounds like the tone for you.

From gold Bueno Style necklaces to silvery shiny hair, and bright enamel to soft cashmere, Ballard is all set to get you what you need… or maybe just want. Give us a call at 206.706.2707 to schedule an appointment, or drop by and say hello at 5401 Ballard Ave NW!

Art at VAIN (both locations!) in December: Heavy Metal, Manger Magic

Sunday, December 2nd, 2007

We’ve got some truly excellent art shows opening at both VAIN locations this week. First, at VAIN downtown, we’ve got Atlanta artist R. Land’s 3rd annual Holiday Manger Magic art show. R. Land has quite the cult following, and if you’ve seen his paintings, famous Loss Cat fliers, or work with The Cartoon Network’s Aqua Teen Hunger Force, then you know why.

R. Land Speckles Aha

Opening reception for R.Land’s Holiday Manger Magic show Thursday, Dec 6 from 6 to 10pm at VAIN downtown- 2018 1st Ave. Art on display through the end of January.

Next up at VAIN Ballard, we’ve got new works by metal (ok, maybe not heavy, but still metal) + enamel artist Julia Garrels for Ballard’s Second Saturday Art Walk. Julia, also known as MetalWing, creates some of the most vivid and unique wearable art around. Call it a trunk show, call it an art opening, call it great work that’s not to be missed.

Julia Garrels Bracelet
“I love to create art for the human form, something that highlights the natural attributes of a person. Or just makes someone feel happy.”

Opening reception for New Works by Julia Garrels Saturday, Dec 8 from 6 to 9pm at VAIN Ballard- 5401 Ballard Ave NW. Pieces on display through the end of December.

Seasonal snacks and refreshments will be served at both openings.

See you on Thursday and Saturday at VAIN!
