moroccanoil

VAIN blog readers, meet Moroccan oil. It’s an amazing hair product that works for every hair type and leaves hair silky, shiny, and smelling soooo good. It has natural UV + heat protectors and won’t weigh hair down. Magic! We don’t mind admitting that we’re a little obsessed.

VAIN downtown stylist Jenn C loves Moroccan oil for her fine-haired clients (YAY!), thick haired clients (ALSO YAY), clients with extensions, and everyone in between. Here’s what VAIN dowtown + VAIN Ballard stylist Alexis has to say about it:

“Oh Moroccon oil! How I love thee! I have yet to find a hair type that doesn’t agree with this African treat. From the finest bleachy-est strands to the most unruly coarse angry nests, Moroccan oil will smoothe and soothe. The scent alone reminds me of a relaxing vacation.

Very little goes a long way. As a stylist with a ton of hair who’s a bit heavy-handed in the product dept., I’ve been using my own personal bottle for two months now. This is an amazing feat! Yippee for Moroccan oil.”

So there you go. Now that you’ve been introduced, we suggest that you + Moroccan oil get to know eachother a little better, fall in love, make a lifelong commitment, live happily ever after. After a few drops you’ll totally want to.

Moroccan oil is available in both small + large sizes at both VAIN salons. Feel free to ask your stylist to use it the next time you come in.

Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy – Now at VAIN!

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

An exciting new treatment from VAIN stylist Emmett. In his own words he describes what Keratin Smoothing is, and why we love it.

About a year ago I attended advanced training workshops and obtained certification in a break-through technique called: Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy. Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy is a new revolutionary patent pending treatment that literally infuses keratin deep into the hair to create smoother, shinier, healthier and more manageable hair for up to five months.

Of course I was a little skeptical when I first heard of it. There are other services on the market which claim the same results, like the “Brazilian Straightener.” I checked them out at the ABS show this spring. I was very disappointed, can’t say I loved the results. The hair looked very heavy and smelled of formaldehyde. First, I don’t want formaldehyde on my clients or myself. What are the long term health risks of that? It also gives off an unpleasant aroma, a smell you’d only be comfortable with if you were raised in a funeral home. Last summer a colleague was telling me of a new hair relaxer system, and of course I thought she was speaking of Brazilian Straightener. Once she convinced me it wasn’t, I signed up for a workshop and flew out the next week. I was amazed by Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy; it is chemical-free, has a pleasant floral aroma, brings movement, swing, shine, and the health of the hair is extraordinary.

Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy can be used on all hair types, over any type of straightener; lye, no-lye, Japanese, permed, color treated, bleached or highlighted. It will actually make hair look & feel healthier. It can also complement your relaxer service by adding strength, increasing shine, and simplifying styling. This is the product I’ve been waiting for my whole career.

Keratin Complex will:
* Loose to Medium Curls: it will straighten the hair for 3 to 5 months
* Tighter Spiral and Frizzy Hair: it will drop curl, loosen curl pattern reduce frizz and make individual curl more uniform.
* Relaxed Hair: makes hair stronger, shinier, and bouncy. Will also allow you to work out without sweating your style out.
* Excellent for Children: it’s temporary, chemical free and will make hair more manageable.

Emmett is available at both the Ballard and Downtown locations. If Keratin Complex sounds like it’s just what you’ve been waiting for, please contact our front desk to schedule a free consultation.

Bigger plumper curls

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

Now on VAIN’s shelves, right next to your favorite curl-loving product:

Towels

These Jersey towels are handmade by VAIN stylist Aran. They’re perfect to use when plopping curls, and much more aesthetically pleasing than keeping an old t-shirt in your bathroom.

For those already using the plopping technique, you know it is great for long curly hair. If you haven’t tried it/heard of it, you’re probably wondering what on earth we’re talking about. Here’s a quick rundown on how-to:

- After washing + conditioning, apply your favorite product to wet hair
- Put a jersey towel down on a chair or the bathroom vanity
- Lean over the towel with your head hanging down, bent over from your waist
- Position the wet hair onto towel so the curls are all concentrated on top of the head
- Pull the towel taut against the top and sides of the head
- Grab the 2 sides and twist them into long rolls near each ear
- Pull the towel extensions to the nape of the neck + tie together to secure
- Leave on hair for 15-20 mins
- Take the towel off and gently shake down the curls, then diffuse or air-dry
- For extra control, scrunch in a bit more gel after removing the towel

Not only are the Jersey towels a lot prettier to look at, the material helps prevent the frizz that terrycloth towels can cause. Aran’s towels are currently available at both locations. Appointments with the creator herself are available at VAIN Ballard – call 206.706.2707 to schedule!

Because who wouldn’t want a crimper for Christmas?

GoldNHot
Gold N’ Hot Crimping Iron, $18.99 at VAIN.

I was going to write a whole post about my top five picks for holiday gifts you can buy at VAIN, but we all know there can only be one winner. And that winner, dear VAIN Blog readers, is the Gold n’ Hot Crimping Iron. Because nothing says “I celebrate the season and I honor you, my friend” like the gift of beautiful, teeny, sawtooth crimps.

So- instead of listing out my favorite VAIN items (sorry, luxurious deep conditioner and VAIN Gift Certificates!), I’ve decided to list my top five reasons why a Gold n’ Hot crimper from VAIN would be the best gift this side of a manger instead. Don’t hate.

1. Crimping irons are the Bedazzler of hair. They add exquisite pizzazz to any look or style.

2. It’s under 20 bucks. I promise you though, the crimped looks it will create, whether for a night out or a night in (in my case, including hangin with my pals Sweatpants, Biore, and the Ghost Whisperer), will be priceless.

3. A crimping iron is a truly unique gift. Please try to think of one person you know who’s given or gotten one. See?

4. Endless entertainment! Why not give your gift recipient something amusing to do with their hair while waiting for that bagel dog to cook in the microwave at 2am? Late-night crimping after a few appletinis is funny. Trust me. Except for the appletinis part.*

5. Crimped hair lights up the faces of friends and loved ones wherever you go. Don’t believe me? Just try to walk all crimped up into your next work meeting or family function and see if you don’t get a reaction. Instant impact!

So there you have it. If I haven’t convinced you yet, then let the spirit of Alyssa Milano hairdos past be your guide. You know the look. And don’t thank me for this hot tip- the gift of crimping belongs to us one and all.

Happy holidays and hairstyling,

Rebecca P.
VAIN blogger + crimper

Gold N Hot hair crimpers are available at VAIN downtown- call 206.441.3441 to put yours on hold today.

*SERIOUS NOTE: Hot hair tools should always be used responsibly! VAIN does not advocate ever using them any other way. Please take care when putting anything hot and plugged in the general vicinity of your head.

All that glitters isn’t gold

Friday, November 28th, 2008

Don’t get us wrong – this isn’t out to bash the sparkly and shiny products of the world. An entire novel could be written on our love for Pureology’s Glossing Mist, for one. But sometimes that’s just not what you’re looking for; sometimes a lack of golden glow is just the ticket.

Matt products

L to R: Kevin Murphy – Sticky Business, Spice – Mat Wave, Osmo – Clay Wax, Hairgum – Matt Wax

Both Sticky Business and the Mat Wave have a soft touch but no shine to the finish, whereas the Clay and Matt Waxes have a dry texture right from the start. All of the above work well for shorter hair textures, while Sticky Business also works well for longer layered cuts looking to add shape and definition. None of them fit the mold of most TV advertisements, where shine is seemingly lauded as the only desired end result.

Ask your stylist during your next appointment what your perfect product would be, or drop by any time to consult with our front desk staff on the best choice. The products listed here are available at both Downtown and Ballard locations.

Back to your regularly scheduled [sparkly] holiday shopping…

Oil Slicks

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

This last Sunday, I had big plans, so I made it a point to spend some extra time on my hair. I protected it with Pureology’s Colour Max + Instant Repair before blowing it out, to shield from the heat and give lightweight conditioning. I used the equally featherweight Glossing Mist before flat ironing, which always helps me prevent flyaways without weighing my fine hair down.

To my dismay, my roots lay flat against my scalp. Despite all my attention and all the best products at my disposal, it was greasy and lifeless and lost. I try to shampoo my hair as infrequently as possible, and this time I’d missed the mark. There was no time left to wash it and start from scratch, and no Fresh Hair by our darling Kevin Murphy to save me. Talcum powder can do in a pinch, but of course I had none of that either. In desperation, I looked to my train case full of makeup. Mineral powder foundation? In a move either insane or inspired, I sprinkled it in my bangs and shook it through with my fingers. Low and behold… it worked!

Keep in mind that my partial foil and my skin tone are similar enough to pull this off – I certainly wouldn’t have done it if I had jet black or bright white hair. But it’s my new favorite in-a-pinch trick, and I couldn’t wait to share.

What do you say, stylists, to my earlier statement – inspired, or insane?

Sarah Jo

KevinMyurphy_VAIN

Kevin Murphy Jetpak with travel-sized shampoo, conditioner, body wash + lotion? $17.95 at VAIN. Meeting the man of your hair dreams after he taught VAIN stylists cool new stying techniques + ways to use his fantastic hair products? Priceless.

-Rebecca P.

Kevin Murphy Jetpaks available for multiple hair types at both VAIN locations. More on the teachings of Mr Murphy as soon as I wake up from this dream.

I don’t want to get too ahead of myself here, but this just might be the best hair day of my life.

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

I just got word that Kevin Murphy, celebrity hairstylist, man of yummy/amazing/natural ingredient-rich hair products, man of mystery, MAN OF MY DREAMS, will be in Seattle tonight for a hair product class that several VAIN hairstylists will be attending. AND THAT I APPARENTLY WILL BE ATTENDING, TOO (this is shocking because I’m a VAIN blogger, not a stylist. My motto? I don’t do hair, I just have it and say stuff about it with words).

You all know how I feel about Kevin Murphy: he is my Jordan Catalano. He is my Vidal Sassoon. He is my shampoo, my conditioner, my anti-frizz polishing cream and my dry hair cleaning spray. He is my hair everything. Tonight, the dream becomes a reality.

More toning goodness from A/G

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

As I was taking photos for this post, people were peaking over my shoulder and exclaiming – “I love that stuff!”
Alexis says it not only “smells like a vacation” but says it’s perfect for restoring ash tones and ridding the dreaded brass. She recommends it to all of her blonde and brunette clients. Rachel concurred, saying she loves that “does exactly what it’s supposed to do.” In other words, it really is a toner!

Keep your blondes (and light browns) looking cool this summer with A/G Silver toning shampoo + conditioner.

Change of pace

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

Before VAIN, I did some less than ideal things to my hair. The color debacle deserves it’s own post, but it wasn’t just the damage I inflicted with repeated home bleaching. I didn’t know much about product, either. I can picture dragging a comb through wet hair, freshly shampooed with whatever was on sale.

Now, if this sounds like your daily routine, and you’re happy with it, then ignore my tale of transformation. If your hair is healthy, glowing, and strong, there’s no need to make changes. But if you’re baffled by breakage, buildup, and dullness, you might be making the same mistakes I was.

I can’t remember the first time I heard that you didn’t need to wash your hair daily. The idea kind of blew my mind. Wouldn’t my hair just look worse? Didn’t I need to get the ‘dirt’ out to leave my hair shiny and free? I didn’t understand the benefit of the oils our scalp produces naturally; instead, I was stripping everything from my hair on a daily basis.

My first upgrade was to Pureology Hydrate shampoo and conditioner. I needed to try to protect the investment of my gorgeous new color, now that I’d left the world of drugstore boxes behind me. I found that my hair felt much softer and smoother after just a shampoo, and I didn’t need piles of conditioner like I previously had. I obviously paid more than I was accustomed to at $18.95, but after a while I realized that bottle lasted me an entire year. With my fine hair and intermittent shampooing, I realize average usage might be a little more than mine – but I was actually saving money buying fancy-pants products.

As Rebecca has mentioned, we’re a little Kevin-Murphy-happy ’round here. Let me add my own praises! Cheapskate that I am, I ponied up for the full “Kevin Murphy Experience” after hearing Rachel mention it at least 200 times in one week. I got Maxi Wash, Angel Wash, Angel Rinse, and Born Again. I use all four products now, but just once a week. My poor little hairs, after years of flat irons, deserved such pampering.

I’ve never loved my hair so much! With my activity level [read: sedentary] I’m able to wash my and style my hair just once a week. Who knew low maintenance could look so good?

VAIN hair products
The VAIN downtown hair product wall: so embarrassing when you run into your exes.

I’ve made no secret of the fact that I’m currently in a deep, committed relationship with the Kevin Murphy line of natural hair products, but the truth is that there have been others… many others. Some of my favorite formers, in no particular order:

Tigi Bed Head After-Party
The name says it all: if you’re walking home in last night’s shoes, at least your hair can look good. The hot pink After-Party container/pump looks like a mic and the product itself smoothes flyaways and tames hair-of-shame like a champ. By far the best-smelling hair product I’ve ever used.

Pureology Hydrate Shampoo
Great for color treated hair. This is the one in the light purple bottle and my hair always drinks it up. It just feels luxurious to use Pureology products in general, and VAIN has just about all of them.

Redken Outshine
This anti-frizz polishing milk doesn’t have the scent or pizzazz packaging of Bed Head After-Party (yep, I said pizzazz!), but it’s a light n’ lovely product for soothing your hair. Truly one of my favorites. Use After-Party casually; take Outshine home to your parents.

Murray’s Pomade
What can I say? I like a nice tin.

VAIN’s Dirty Boy, Dirty Girl
I told myself I wouldn’t cry! Like listening to PJ Harvey (a LOT) and making completely avoidable life choices, this amazing, magical purple goo was an essential part of the dawn of my 20s. I don’t even know what it did, exactly, but my hair always looked better and smelled really good when I used it. AND THERE WAS A TEENY PLASTIC PIG AT THE BOTTOM OF EACH CONTAINER. So random, so great.

So there you have it. As Kevin Murphy and I explore new ground in our relationship together (I just met his Fresh.Hair dry shampoo and Body.Guard smoother and I think they liked me!!), I can’t help but take an occasional visit down hair product memory lane. Your firsts and favorites are always the hardest to forget, I guess.
