Saving the Earth in Style

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

VAIN is collecting our hair clippings and turning them over to Matter of Trust, an organization creating booms and mats out of recycled hair  to clean up the oil spill in the Gulf.

Hair is a safe, non-toxic renewable resource. And, as anyone who hasn’t washed their hair in a few days can tell you, is great at collecting and holding onto oil. The proof is in the YouTube video:

Let’s clean the oil spill, one stellar haircut at a time! Book your appointment at VAIN Downtown at 206-441-3441 or at VAIN Ballard at 206-706-2707.  Not in need of a haircut? No worries! You can still make a donation here.

Hot Hair: Hero Hair Edition

Monday, May 17th, 2010

When VAIN heard that client Linda was looking to shave her head to raise funds for kids with cancer, our hairstylists lined up to donate their time. First in line? TT, who’s known for her skills + style on the salon floor. Check out what happened next:

During… there it goes…

After. Stunning!

The funds Linda raised from family + friends towards getting her head shaved went to St Baldrick’s Foundation, the second-largest funder of childhood cancer research grants in the US. Not letting any good hair go to waste, her ponytail went to Locks of Love, and her hair clippings were added to VAIN’s donation of cut hair to help absorb the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Now that’s what we call a good haircut.

While VAIN loves a bold hair change for no reason, this buzz cut for a cause left us feeling warm all over (and is it just us or does she look really, really good with her new look?). Thank you, Linda, for asking us to be a part of it!

Check out Linda’s St. Baldrick’s Foundation participant page at: www.stbaldricks.org/participants/Linda. To learn more + become a shavee yourself, visit: www.stbaldricks.org.

Holiday Giving, VAIN Style

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

In the spirit of community, VAIN is collecting donations to help the efforts of The Orion Center, a multi-service facility under the YouthCare agency, to support young people in Seattle.  The Orion Center provides many services for homeless and in-need youth including technical education and skills training, meals, and medical counseling.

On December 17th, the center is hosting a holiday party and VAIN is going to provide gift bags for the 60-70 attendees. Gifts will include essentials such as hats, gloves, hand sanitizer, and shampoo. Our goal is to raise at least $300 by the end of next week to make it happen. You will find donation jars at the front desk at our Downtown and Ballard location for your giving spirit – please stop by and help us support a great cause!

Learn more about the Orion Center at the YouthCare website, and see what other items are on their donation wishlist. Let’s get inspired and start giving!

xo,
VAIN

We are accepting donations through this week at VAIN Downtown – 2018 1st Ave, Seattle and VAIN Ballard – 5401 Ballard Ave NW.

Cookies for Constantine

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

cookie

Stop by VAIN downtown this Saturday, August 15th from 1 to 5pm for Cookies for Constantine, a bake sale/fundraiser for our friend + King County Executive candidate Dow Constantine. We’ll have tasty baked goods prepared lovingly by our VAIN staff (and, who are we kidding, probably by the staff of Toll House + Safeway, too. What? We’re busy doing hair!) out front all afternoon, and all the $ raised will go to Dow’s campaign.

So if you find yourself on 1st Ave this Saturday, come by, have a cookie or cupcake, and learn more about the positive change we know Dow Constantine will make happen as King County Executive. This is a really, really, important role in local government, so every cookie counts. :)

Cookies for Constantine runs this Saturday, Aug 15 from 1-5pm at VAIN downtown, 2018 1st Ave, Seattle. For more information about Dow Constantine + his campaign, visit www.dowconstantine.com.

Ballard Brag: Second Saturday Art-Walk

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

It is my pleasure to introduce the newest addition to the VAIN blog we’re calling “Ballard Brag” – written always and forever by yours truly, Julie K., VAIN Ballard front woman/multi-tasker extraordinaire. Ballard Brag is about (you guessed it) all things VAIN Ballard as presented through quick snapshots of in-the-moment happenings and special events here at your beloved Ballard neighborhood beauty shop. Trust me, there will be some pictures taken with my ancient camera phone, the likes of which would even make Zach Morris blush.

First installment! I snapped this pic of Hoquiam performing at VAIN Ballard last Saturday during the Art-Walk:

Proof that VAIN Ballard rocks more then just hair.

Thanks to Damien Jurado and Drake Jurado for an amazing performance!

Yours Truly,
Julie K.

VAIN Wig Shoppe: Hairspray!

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

A few weeks ago we gave you a behind the scenes look at Sarah B’s preparation for the VAIN Wig Shoppe to be featured at the Seattle Men’s Chorus/Seattle Women’s Chorus fundraiser.

Hairspray!

We’re happy to report that it was a wonderful, stylish, hilarious good time – and we’ve got the photos to prove it! Check out the full photo set courtesy of VAIN apprentice stylist William via VAIN’s flickr page. Thank you to Sarah B. and our own Victoria for all the effort to create these extraordinary styles!

VAIN can create a look just for you – whether it’s mile high or mild mannered; real hair or hot pink plastic.

Supporting Dow Constantine: Tonight at the Crocodile!

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Elect Dow Constantine

This evening at the Crocodile, friends + fans of Dow Constantine will take part in a fundraiser for his campaign for King County Executive. We invite you to join us for an evening of good music + good people! [And, with VAIN owner Victoria Gentry as a host - good hair!]

Why Dow? 3 great reasons to support him:

- Dow is an effective environmental leader – saving green spaces around Puget Sound & leading the process to finally build 30 miles of light rail to connect Seattle and surrounding communities

-With experience in small business and as the son of school teachers, Dow understands what jobs make our economy work and works to put the county on the cutting edge of job creation & preservation

-Dow has worked tirelessly for more than 15 years behind the scenes for the Northwest Music Community, lobbying to preserve all ages shows, fund Vera, and stop overly restrictive nightlife regulations

For more information, or to make a donation online, please visit DowConstantine.com.

See you tonight at 2nd + Blanchard!

Imaginary Celebrations

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

The ladies of Three Imaginary Girls have been friends, clients, and cohorts for a long time now. Even one of the imaginary boys, Chris B, can proudly wear a “Carly Cuts My Hair” button.

You can imagine how thrilled we were when our neighbors at the Crocodile returned better than ever. So the chance to celebrate both at once? AND have Top Pot donuts? Man. It doesn’t get much better than that.

We were on site to do our famous Guerilla Hair Crocodile Style – impromptu updos including green extensions for those who were feeling the Crocodile spirit. VAIN owner + styledriver Victoria Gentry was there to celebrate, saying:

“Liz + Dana rocked super hard, and the crowd was in the mood to party. We laughed a lot, and the response was enthusiastic + foxy! The Crocodile is definitely back in a big way. The 3 I G really know how to throw a party and are incredibly gracious, non-pretentious hosts that don’t kill the fun by taking things too seriously. I love working with them!”

To all our imaginary friends, thanks for supporting such great bands and inviting us to join in on the party. We’re eagerly awaiting the next big event!

Got Tuba?

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

VAIN is a proud sponsor of this weekend’s HonkFest West. The event, continuing at multiple venues over the course of three days, is a celebration of radical marching bands. They’ll even be playing in the streets!

One of our favorite quotes for the how + why of this festival:

“…they honk their horns because it’s the best way they know to protest a world of violence and oppression. Many of these bands are less than a decade old, and many were born in reaction to the fatalism and indifference that has gripped the advanced industrialized democracies. In response, honkers have been providing a heartfelt musical antidote, a soundtrack for anti-war rallies, political mobilizations, pride parades and joyous reclamations of public space. Every one of these bands has a unique sense of humor to complement their sound, as they mock and discredit the roots of hatred and injustice through the whimsical act of making music together. The result is a spectacle that is radical and subversive without being militant or sanctimonious.”

The What Cheer Brigade, pictured above, played at HonkFest East – while they won’t be here for the West, it’s a great example of how awesome the event will be!

Check out their schedule to see the full lineup – we’ll see you there!

My Rights: Faces of Freedom – This Saturday at VAIN Downtown

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

VAIN, FlashVolunteer*, and the ACLU of Washington join forces to bring you an exceptional photo exhibit and super simple steps to do your part.

For the month of April, Vain will house Mychal Richardson’s portraits of courageous individuals from all across Washington who fought for their rights and the rights of others. Their willingness to take a stand for freedom, fairness, and equality has made the path easier for those who follow. The ACLU is proud to have represented them.

This Saturday we will celebrate the opening of this inspiring exhibit from 1 to 6 pm at our Downtown location. Events like this are the keystone of VAIN’s mission of integrating art + community + social activism. We hope you can join us, and get involved!

VAIN
