The Moisture Myth

Monday, August 30th, 2010

As a recent Seattle transplant, I’ve had a battle or two when trying to wrangle my own formerly luxurious curls. Upon moving to the PNW, they were limp and my heart was flattening right along with them. I realized there was little to do but begin my latest quest in my new west coast (best coast!) lifestyle and start experimenting with potential solutions for these less than happy curls.

The first step to recovery was realizing that the ringlet routine that I had for the past seven years just wasn’t working anymore. After mixing and matching and trying all the usual trial and error of product concoctions available to me in my new home @ VAIN Beauty World, the idea finally came to me like a bat out of hell! It was so obvious that you could’ve knocked me over with a feather, people. SCIENCE. Hello!

I hail from the “windy” city, the land of weather to the extreme, Chicago, and I realized that I was spending a lot time blowing hot air defending my old hair habits. I should’ve known that despite Seattle’s rainy reputation, the level of moisture in the air is actually rather lacking compared to my days residing in the Midwest. It was like every lightbulb in my brain lit up at the same time- what do curls want most? Moisture!!! I felt like I uncovered the most coveted secret in the whole planet earth and I had to share it with you. The most obvious is sometimes the last thing you think of due to preconceived notions about a certain city- lesson learned.

Curly hair + the appropriate amount of moisture = happy hairs. As an apprentice stylist and connoisseur of leave-in options available, I recommend a few depending on what your locks are craving.

Kevin Murphy's Leave-In Luxury is a one-size-fits-all! Weightless, paraben-free help for hair.

AG's Fast Food is rescue 9-1-1 for long term split end repair and a serious shine intervention.

Deva Curl's B'Leave-In is perfect for the seriously parched. A real wake up call that is chock full of vitamins.

Pick up any of these lil’ helpers @ VAIN downtown or @ VAIN Ballard.  Viva la hair health!

double up on this magic!

Who? Those with Fine to Medium curl or wave looking to enhance that business.

Why? To create soft curl or wave with hold.

Secret Tip from the Stars: Apply to super wet hair to minimize frizz and maximize awesome!

At $18.95 a pop it’s a steal- a little goes a long way with this one.  Look for it @ VAIN downtown and VAIN in Ballard.  You can look for Vai at both salons as well!

Redken = Rad!

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

We humble hair hustlers over @ VAIN Beauty World would like to introduce a new kind of post which features a focus on specific and magical product each week in order to make you masters of your own domain!

VAIN stylist Carinn is the brain behind all this Staff Pick business and is a huge fan of Redken Full Frame 07 Mousse.

Sportin' Sexy!

Why? If you want body, hold and shine- this is the stuff. It’s extremely versatile. It’s not the mousse of the 80’s, people.

Who? It’s great for both curly and straight haired folks. Amazing!

Styling tip from the Stars: Adding heat to the product (i.e. blow-drying or diffusing) intensifies the product’s styling ability and adds softness. If it does get a tad crunchy on you get scrunch-y on it! Loosening your locks by making a fist and squeezing sections of your hair will instantly soften it.

Pick up some Full Frame Mousse for yourself at our downtown or Ballard salon for a smooth $16.95. To make an appointment to see the vixen with all the moves, Carinn, call 206.441.3441

All that glitters isn’t gold

Friday, November 28th, 2008

Don’t get us wrong – this isn’t out to bash the sparkly and shiny products of the world. An entire novel could be written on our love for Pureology’s Glossing Mist, for one. But sometimes that’s just not what you’re looking for; sometimes a lack of golden glow is just the ticket.

Matt products

L to R: Kevin Murphy – Sticky Business, Spice – Mat Wave, Osmo – Clay Wax, Hairgum – Matt Wax

Both Sticky Business and the Mat Wave have a soft touch but no shine to the finish, whereas the Clay and Matt Waxes have a dry texture right from the start. All of the above work well for shorter hair textures, while Sticky Business also works well for longer layered cuts looking to add shape and definition. None of them fit the mold of most TV advertisements, where shine is seemingly lauded as the only desired end result.

Ask your stylist during your next appointment what your perfect product would be, or drop by any time to consult with our front desk staff on the best choice. The products listed here are available at both Downtown and Ballard locations.

Back to your regularly scheduled [sparkly] holiday shopping…

VAIN wins! Best Beauty Store in Seattle

Monday, December 24th, 2007

vain-beauty_1.jpg

We asked Santa for victory this holiday season and we got it: VAIN has been named the audience and editorial winner for Best Beauty Store in Seattle on Citysearch.com! With hair products + tools for every hair type + budget and top-shelf Nouba makeup from Italy (not to mention the most talented resident makeup artist in town) we’re not entirely surprised, but when you consider some of the big names we were up against, we’re even more excited about it.

VAIN also placed in the top three for Best Belltown Shop, Best Jewelry, Best Gifts and Stationery (VAIN stationery buyer Mel knows what’s up), and Best Offbeat Store in Citysearch’s annual Best of Seattle contest.

Big thanks to our clients for putting us at the top of these lists with your votes. We promise to keep delivering, and we’re working on some giveaways for ‘08 to show you our appreciation. Stay tuned.
