If you’re as big of a vintage clothing nerd as I am, you’ll be pumped to find out that the 3rd Annual Seattle Vintage Fashion Show is just around the corner!

Our newest French Canadian gem of a hairdresser, Melanie, will be heading up the hair with some other fabulous folks from VAIN Beauty World and we couldn’t be more stoked. I asked Melanie (a champion swing dancer and instructor by night-whoa!) why she loves the bits out of some vintage styles:

“I love the style of the 20′s, 30′s and 40′s. I’ve been swing dancing for ten years and it just comes with it. It’s in the style of the dance that I’m doing and to replicate it makes it 100% authentic.”

Lindy Hopper is the brains behind all of this beautiful work. Click here for every detail you could possibly want on the clothing and to get your tickets to the show!

Get Spooky: Batcave Day this Saturday at VAIN

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

Must be the season of the witch… and the bat: this Saturday, Oct 30th at VAIN downtown we’re celebrating Batcave Day, our annual tribute to the darker side of art + fashion and the spookiest time of year.

But this isn’t a standard Batcave Day, dear VAIN Blog readers + trick-or-treaters. This year we’ve got a little something up our sleeves (our long black sleeves, or course) for everyone:

  • Get 25% off all purchases all day long. Good towards jewelry, art, hair products, stationery, wigs, you name it.*
  • Going to a Halloween party? Stop by on your way and snap your picture at the VAIN Mirror digital photobooth for your chance to win a $100 VAIN Gift Certificate. Best picture/costume wins!
  • Join us from 3:00 – 7:00pm as we unveil “Darker Than Thou,” a Batcave-themed art show featuring works by Rawkson, Lindey Ivey, Fable and Fury, R Land, and Michael O’Driscoll, with spooky sounds by VAIN’s own Batcave Day overlord, DJ Eli Blu.
  • Candy for everyone. ‘Nuff said.
  • So there you have it. A day filled with art, darkness, and discounts. Not to mention that the VAIN staff tends to get gothed to the nines for Batcave Day, which itself is something to behold. We’ve already started practicing.

    See you Saturday,

    VAIN
Bringing Batcave to beauty since 1996

Batcave Day happens at VAIN downtown from 9:00am – 9:00 pm this Saturday, Oct 30th. 2018 1st Ave @Virginia, Seattle. But it happens in our hearts all year round.

*25% off discount good towards all purchases other than hair + waxing services. Valid at VAIN downtown on Saturday only.

VAIN Ballard: Featured Jeweler & Photographer

    Tuesday, October 5th, 2010

This Saturday (October 9th) as part of the Ballard Art Walk, VAIN Ballard will be featuring jewelry by Ada Rosman. Unveiling a new collection, Ada’s work emulates the inspiration found in the photographs of the talented Claire Eliza.

This past summer, Claire studied abroad in Barcelona, Spain and had the opportunity to travel through the country. Claire, a local Washingtonian, is currently finishing her photography studies in Arizona. In this collaboration, Claire made images that represented the beautiful country of Spain.

Upon return, Ada created a new body of work based on these images. Claire’s lovely photos from abroad have been turned into unique handmade postcards that are also available for purchase.

Join us this Saturday from 6-9pm at VAIN Ballard for some art, drinks, and food– 5401 Ballard Ave NW.

    Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

Thursday! Thursday! Thursday! Join VAIN stylists/DJs Carly, Valentine, and William (as well as VAIN front desk superstar Eli Blu) for the final Make it Rain at Havana. Special guest DJs will be cranking out the dance jams and Seattle’s own Aqueduct will be rocking the house until the wee hours. And, yes, you read that right. It is, sadly, the final Make It Rain as Carly is leaving the Pacific Northwest for new adventures. Lots of luck, Carly. Thank you for the music, the style, the haircuts and for MAKING IT RAIN!

VAIN Ballard ArtWalk: Featured Jeweler & Live Performance.

    Thursday, August 12th, 2010

Just a little reminder, this weekend is the Ballard Art Walk and VAIN Ballard will be featuring work by Nancy O’Connell of Black Rabbit. She is “fascinated by wood and metal and the effect of time on their surfaces”. You can definitely see her attraction to texture, color, and pattern—in the unexpected combinations of materials in her accessories.

In addition to showcasing Black Rabbit jewelry during Saturday’s ArtWalk, VAIN Ballard will be hosting a free live performance by Hoquiam, whose music is inspired by the childhood the Jurado Brothers (Damien and Drake) spent in Grays Harbor. The region to many is known for its cold, damp, grey, low hanging clouds as well as for its isolation. Their music blends folk music, while bringing an early 60’s garage feel to the songs. You can definitely get a sense of their hometown Hoquiam in their lyrics. As written on their website “Gothic folk, personal narratives, and simple strong percussive elements define the music of Hoquiam. Sparse, desolate, and a place you will find yourself passing through from time to time – both the town and the band.”

Make sure to come by VAIN Ballard (5401 Ballard Ave NW!) this Saturday from 6-9pm for art, food, drinks, and a live performance by Hoquiam at 8pm.

VAIN Ballard ArtWalk Preview: Black Rabbit and Hoquiam

    Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

This month’s featured jeweler at VAIN Ballard is Nancy O’Connell of Black Rabbit. She is an art director by day, while weekends, nights, and sometimes on her lunch-hours she makes “stuff” – adornment for you body and walls from vintage tins. She started Black Rabbit late in summer of 2007 and focuses on limited edition and one-of-a-kind accessories from tin, vintage and new fabrics. Her work will be available at VAIN Ballard through August, with an artist reception at our salon during Ballard’s ArtWalk on August 14.

Accompanying Nancy’s jewelry unveiling at the ArtWalk will be a live performance by Hoquiam. Hoquiam is a band that is made up of two brothers, Drake and Damien Jurado. With their self-titled release, they have created an album based around their childhood in Grays Harbor. To find out more about what inspires this duos’ music as well as this month’s featured jeweler, stay tuned for next week’s blog posts.
