Thursday, February 26th, 2009Win a free hair color appointment with Kellianne!
Friday, February 20th, 2009
Our newest VAIN hairstylist and recent NYC transplant Kelliane is already a hot hair ticket at both VAIN downtown and VAIN Ballard- her haircuts are designed to grow out beautifully (always a bonus), her special occasion hair skills are awesome, and she creates textured looks, naturally urban hairstyles, and full-bodied blowouts like nobody’s business. But it’s her color skills that have made Kellianne an instant standout- you know that soft, shiny, natural hair color you wish you were born with? She can do that. On your head. No joke.
So! To celebrate the arrival of the latest talented hairstylist on the VAIN scene, we’re giving away a free hair color appointment with Kellianne (up to a $100 value, depending on the service). One person will win the grand hair color prize; three lucky runners-up will win $25 each in VAIN credit towards a future service with Kellianne- cut, color, or updo.
To enter, send an e-mail to vain(at)vain(dot)com with your full name and phone number. One e-mail per person only, please. We’ll draw winners at random on March 1st. The contest is open to both existing VAIN clients and anyone else who wants their hair to look amazing, so e-mail away and tell your friends. Good luck!
Can’t wait for the contest to get your hair done by Kellianne? Call VAIN downtown at 206.441.3441 or VAIN Ballard at 206.706.2707 to make an appointment. Photo by Sarah Joann Murphy.
Swag for a cause: support Arts Corps at VAIN
Thursday, February 19th, 2009
The next time you’re at VAIN downtown or VAIN Ballard, we hope you’ll check out the Arts Corps tote bags, bumper stickers, and pins we’ve got for sale at both salons. 100% of proceeds from sales will go to support Arts Corps’ commitment to deliver powerful arts learning to underserved Seattle-area kids. Great organization, great cause, plus they just look cool. So grab some swag and help kids “make art anyway.”
Arts Corps totes ($10), bumper stickers ($5) and pins ($2) are available at both VAIN locations. Find out more about Arts Corps and learn how you can get involved in its revolutionary movement for equal arts education at artscorps.org.
Hot Hair in action
Wednesday, February 18th, 2009
We usually wait until after a VAIN client’s hair is done being cut or colored to snap a Hot Hair shot, but this one looked so good taking shape we couldn’t resist.
Client: Steph
Stylist: Janae (VAIN downtown- pretty Hot Hair yourself there, lady)
If my hair was a car… “it would be a 1969 El Camino!”
We like that ride and we like your style, Steph. Short in front and long in back: good on cars, good on you.
To book an appointment for your next hot rod hairstyle, call VAIN downtown at 206.441.3441 or VAIN Ballard at 206.706.2707.

Anatomically correct hearts from the Germina Trashpile collection
In the theme of our current VAIN art installation, comes a new addition in our boutique. Hand-made, felt works from Aprille of Germina Trashpile include anatomically correct hearts, like the one you see above. What a subversive alternative to chocolates in a heart-shaped box – although I would never say no to either on any given day!
Cheers!
Sylvia
Hot Hair: the long + the short of it
Thursday, February 12th, 2009
Look at that smiling face. That’s the face of someone who just got their hair done and loves it. And the way the length of the cut sweeps around to the front? AWESOME.
Client: Shasti
Stylist: Liza (VAIN downtown)
Why the long/short hybrid hair? “I can never decide if I want my hair short or long, so this is perfect!”
We think so too, Shasti. Way to party in the front and get to business in the back. Your hair looks great (nice shirt, too!).
Not sure about your next look and want to try something different? Call VAIN downtown at 206.441.3441 or VAIN Ballard at 206.706.2707 for a list of stylists who can make your next best hairstyle happen.
Artist studios available above VAIN!
Wednesday, February 4th, 2009Good news for artists who don’t like to travel far to get their hair done: VAIN currently has several artist studios for rent above our downtown salon!
The studios are work only, have natural light, a shared 1/2 bathroom, and offer 24-hour access. 6 month lease + deposit required. Rents start at only $180/month, no utilities fees.
We encourage local artists (quiet ones a plus- doing hair downstairs requires focus!) looking for a private, creative space to apply to join our talented group of tenants (Christine Larsen’s awesome robots, anyone??). Contact lisam (at) vain d o t c o m to find out more about the available studios and schedule an appointment to check them out.

Berlin Fashion Week

I can’t even decide if I love the updo in the center or the left more. Never mind, I just love them both! Someone throw a fancy party ASAP, please, so I have an excuse to do that with my hairs.

Why, out of all the people in the world who could take the precious gift of crimped hair and spread its message of tiny zigzagged beauty + joy to the world, did it have to be Tyra? WHY?
Don’t get me wrong- many of us at VAIN have watched T-Banks’ hair over the years with great interest; Some of us have even tried it on. But the crimp? The holy grail of hairstyles-that-haven’t-been-given-their-due-but-surely-will-rise-again? I don’t know, it just doesn’t feel right. I’d rather see it on the streets of Seattle or on a runway someplace. Anyone got a picture they can send me? Help a crimp fan out!
