Out on the town

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

VAIN stylists Rachel and Jenny were featured in this week’s Club Directory in the The Stranger. The tell-tale wallpaper gives away their post at the McLeod Residence for the photo.

Club directory

Our friends and neighbors at McLeod will be saying goodbye to their Belltown location tomorrow. Many VAIN clients and staff have celebrated good times and seen incredible art there. We look forward to seeing their next incarnation!

Congrats to Rachel and Jenny for being oh-so-photographable. And thanks to Jenny Jimenez of photojj.com for the lovely image!

Back again by popular demand! Every Friday and Saturday in November, VAIN resident makeup artist Christine Cherbonnier will be offering free private 30-minute makeup lessons at VAIN downtown (a $40 value!). Learn how to get your holiday look on, the best makeup application techniques + shades for your hair + skin tone, or find out once and for all how to apply that smokey eye you’ve always wanted. Your lesson, your face, your call.

Free makeup lessons are by available appointment only, so call VAIN downtown at 206.441.3441 to book yours.

These lessons are designed to show you how to apply makeup and create new looks for yourself at home, and do not include wedding day or special event applications. Those appointments can be booked separately.

Oil Slicks

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

This last Sunday, I had big plans, so I made it a point to spend some extra time on my hair. I protected it with Pureology’s Colour Max + Instant Repair before blowing it out, to shield from the heat and give lightweight conditioning. I used the equally featherweight Glossing Mist before flat ironing, which always helps me prevent flyaways without weighing my fine hair down.

To my dismay, my roots lay flat against my scalp. Despite all my attention and all the best products at my disposal, it was greasy and lifeless and lost. I try to shampoo my hair as infrequently as possible, and this time I’d missed the mark. There was no time left to wash it and start from scratch, and no Fresh Hair by our darling Kevin Murphy to save me. Talcum powder can do in a pinch, but of course I had none of that either. In desperation, I looked to my train case full of makeup. Mineral powder foundation? In a move either insane or inspired, I sprinkled it in my bangs and shook it through with my fingers. Low and behold… it worked!

Keep in mind that my partial foil and my skin tone are similar enough to pull this off – I certainly wouldn’t have done it if I had jet black or bright white hair. But it’s my new favorite in-a-pinch trick, and I couldn’t wait to share.

What do you say, stylists, to my earlier statement – inspired, or insane?

Batcave Day 6
DJ blü and Ms. My want you to visit the VAIN Batcave this Saturday.

Calling all ghosts, witches, vampires and goths! This Saturday, October 25th at VAIN downtown!

It is that time of year again where we here at VAIN pay tribute to the history of our building and the uniquely dark subculture of Seattle.

That’s right, mortals and immortals, it’s the 6th Annual Batcave Day at VAIN, founded to reminisce those times gone by of our downtown location, formerly that of the Vogue, Seattle’s premier alternative rock/goth/industrial nightlife destination for many memorable years.

Get prepared for your big Halloween plans with the best staff of wig + theatrical makeup experts as your guide! We’ve got wigs and skills so good they’re spooky!

Come enjoy lovely treats + tricks, with classic and modern goth / industrial tunes all day and night!

When shopping ~ mention “Batcave” at the register to receive 13% OFF any wig or makeup purchase. Offer good on Batcave Day only!

Hosted and music provided by veteran VAIN staffer and former Vogue patron DJ blü, and featuring this year’s co-hostess, our Diva of Doom herself, Ms. My.

See you and the ghosts of the old Vogue building this Saturday at VAIN!

Mua hah ha ha ha!

VAIN Batcave day goes from open till close this Saturday at VAIN downtown- 2018 1st Ave, Seattle.

I don’t want to get too ahead of myself here, but this just might be the best hair day of my life.

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

I just got word that Kevin Murphy, celebrity hairstylist, man of yummy/amazing/natural ingredient-rich hair products, man of mystery, MAN OF MY DREAMS, will be in Seattle tonight for a hair product class that several VAIN hairstylists will be attending. AND THAT I APPARENTLY WILL BE ATTENDING, TOO (this is shocking because I’m a VAIN blogger, not a stylist. My motto? I don’t do hair, I just have it and say stuff about it with words).

You all know how I feel about Kevin Murphy: he is my Jordan Catalano. He is my Vidal Sassoon. He is my shampoo, my conditioner, my anti-frizz polishing cream and my dry hair cleaning spray. He is my hair everything. Tonight, the dream becomes a reality.

VAIN Ballard: Featured jeweler

Friday, October 10th, 2008

Each month at VAIN Ballard we’ll be unveiling works of art you can wear, as curated by our own stylist/artist Aran. This month, we’re thrilled to have the dreamy and imaginative creations of Rachel Rader.

Rader holds a BFA in glass from Virginia Commonwealth University. Currently, she lives and works in Seattle as a professional glass artist.

In Love and out of love

Detail

She has been involved in glass education at Pilchuck Glass School and Pratt Fine Arts Center as a teacher, teaching assistant, and on administration.

Her bio states that “Rachel likes to make work that involves glass, metal, clay, knitting, crocheting, oil paints, sewn parts, plastic toys, pompoms, foreign coins, fur, rubber, music boxes, wood, hair, dryer lint, stickers, prom dress scraps, feathers, rhinestones… ” This ability to be inspired by many mediums is clearly displayed in the pieces at VAIN. The works are striking, not only at first glance, but upon closer inspection prove to be extraordinary. Detailed beading, handmade glass pieces, unique found items, bursts of textiles; each examination proves them to be more intricate and amazingly crafted.

Rader’s pieces will be unveiled tomorrow evening at VAIN Ballard. We invite you to come experience them in person!

Dreamily yours,

VAIN Ballard

Still time to register to vote!

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

The upcoming election and the importance of voting have been hot topics at VAIN these days, so we’ve dug up some info for those of you who’ve been talking about voter registration.

If you live in King County and missed the deadline to register to vote in time for the November 4 election, good news: you can still register to vote through Monday, October 20. The only catch? You have to go to Renton to do it. Road trip! Here’s where you need to go:

King County Elections Office
919 SW Grady Way
Renton, WA

Hours:
Weekdays 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

206-296-VOTE (8683)

http://www.kingcounty.gov/elections/aboutus/directions.aspx

By our expert calculations (fine, it was Mapquest. We’re too busy doing hair for math!), it would only take 19 minutes to get there from VAIN downtown. So grab an unregistered friend, take a long lunch break, maybe hit some of Renton’s excellent thrift store and fast food offerings on your way, and make an actual, awesome, easy difference for our state + country this November, one new voter at a time.
